Mold vs Mildew: How to Tell the Difference
Mildew is a surface fungus that wipes away. Mold grows into materials and can cause structural and health problems. Telling them apart tells you whether you have a cleaning job or a remediation job.

Mildew and mold are both fungi, but they behave very differently โ and the distinction matters because it determines how serious the problem is and how you handle it.
| Mildew | Mold | |
|---|---|---|
| Growth | Surface only โ stays flat | Penetrates into materials |
| Texture | Flat, powdery or fluffy | Fuzzy, slimy, or raised |
| Color | White, gray, or yellowish; browns over time | Green, black, blue, red, many colors |
| Wipes away? | Yes, mostly | No โ roots penetrate |
| Damage | Cosmetic, surface | Structural + health risk |
| Smell | Mild, musty | Strong, musty, pungent |
How to Tell Them Apart
A few practical tests:
- The wipe test: mildew largely wipes away with a cleaner and some scrubbing. Mold stains, smears, and returns because its roots (hyphae) penetrate the surface.
- The texture test: mildew is flat and powdery. Mold is raised, fuzzy, or slimy.
- The location test: mildew likes flat damp surfaces โ shower walls, windowsills, fabric. Mold goes deeper โ into drywall, wood, insulation, and behind surfaces.
- The depth test: if the discoloration is only on the surface, likely mildew. If the material underneath is soft, stained, or damaged, it's mold.
Which Is More Dangerous?
Mold is the more serious of the two. Mildew is mostly a cosmetic nuisance โ it can cause minor respiratory irritation in sensitive people, but it doesn't damage structures and wipes away.
Mold is a different matter: it penetrates and degrades the materials it grows on (drywall, wood, insulation), it can spread extensively and invisibly inside walls and cavities, and some species produce allergens and mycotoxins linked to respiratory symptoms, headaches, and irritation. Mold also almost always indicates a moisture problem that needs fixing.
Cleaning Job or Remediation Job?
Mildew โ cleaning job. Scrub with a bathroom cleaner or diluted bleach, improve ventilation, keep surfaces dry.
Mold โ depends on scope. Small surface mold on non-porous material can sometimes be cleaned carefully. But mold on porous materials (drywall, wood), mold larger than about 10 square feet, mold in HVAC systems, or recurring mold needs professional remediation โ because cleaning the surface while the roots and moisture source remain just means it comes back.
If you're not sure which you're dealing with, that uncertainty itself is a good reason to get a professional assessment โ especially if the growth keeps returning.
